Our methods

# Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Between an event and your reaction sits a layer of interpretation so fast it feels like fact. He didn't reply → I've annoyed him. The presentation stumbled → they've seen through me. CBT is the discipline of slowing that layer down, auditing it, and replacing bad math with better.

It is among the most extensively researched forms of psychotherapy — and in the right hands it's anything but the worksheet-factory its reputation suggests.

## What CBT targets well

- Anxiety loops: catastrophizing, checking, avoiding
- The depressive spiral of withdrawal and self-verdict
- Performance anxiety — boardroom, bedroom, or both
- Perfectionism and its impossible accounting
- Insomnia's racing-mind arithmetic
- Habits maintained by short-term relief at long-term cost

## How we use it

Collaboratively and precisely. We map your specific loops — the predictions, the rules, the avoidances that keep a pattern alive — then run experiments that test them against reality. Between-session practice matters because the change has to happen where your life is, not just in the room.

CBT here rarely travels alone: it pairs with [psychodynamic](/approach/psychodynamic-therapy) depth when the rules have old roots, with [IFS](/approach/internal-family-systems) when a part of you enforces them, and with [EMDR](/approach/emdr) when the alarm is trauma-driven. Structure plus depth beats either alone.

## Practical details

55-minute sessions, $215 with [sliding scale](/rates) from $150–194, downtown or via [telehealth](/online-therapy-dc). CBT work is naturally goal-shaped — we'll define what better looks like and measure against it.

FAQ

## Common questions

### Is CBT too surface-level for complicated problems?

Alone, sometimes. That's why we integrate — CBT handles the maintaining loops while depth-oriented work addresses where they came from. Surface and structure, together.

### Will there be homework?

Yes, and it will be small, specific, and obviously connected to your goals. The evidence is blunt: practice between sessions is where CBT's results come from.
