# Depression Therapy in Washington, DC

Depression doesn't always look like staying in bed. In this city it often looks like showing up, performing, delivering — while the color drains out of everything and you can't remember the last time something felt worth wanting.

Whether it's the visible kind or the high-functioning kind, depression is treatable. Not with pep talks — with methods that address how it actually works.

## What it can look like

- Flatness — nothing terrible, nothing good
- Exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch
- Withdrawal from people and things you used to want
- Irritability with the people closest to you
- A harsh internal commentary that narrates your day
- Going through motions that used to have meaning

## How we treat it

Behavioral work rebuilds contact with what used to matter — deliberately, in doses that are actually possible right now. Cognitive work takes on the internal commentary that calls itself realism. It isn't realism; it's a symptom, and it responds to structured challenge.

Depression also tends to have a story — loss, disappointment, a life that quietly stopped fitting. [Psychodynamic](/approach/psychodynamic-therapy) and [IFS](/approach/internal-family-systems) work give that story somewhere to go, so relief lasts beyond the week.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911 now — please don't wait for an appointment. And if safety ever becomes a concern in our work, we address it first and directly, and we make a plan together.

## Practical details

55-minute sessions, $215 with [sliding scale](/rates) from $150–194, [free 15-minute consultation](/book-online). In person at [One Franklin Square](/therapy-office-washington-dc) or secure telehealth across DC — on the weeks when leaving the house is the hard part, telehealth keeps the work moving.

FAQ

## Common questions

### I'm functioning fine. Can it still be depression?

Yes. High-functioning depression is common in driven people — the outside stays impressive while the inside goes gray. Functioning isn't the test; how life feels is.

### Therapy or medication?

For many people therapy alone is effective; for some the combination works best. We'll give you an honest read as we get to know your situation and coordinate with a prescriber if that's the right call.

### What if I don't have a reason to be depressed?

Depression doesn't require a qualifying event. It has mechanics — biological, psychological, situational — and mechanics can be worked with regardless of whether the cause is obvious.
