Who we work with

# LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

Affirming, here, is not a checkbox on a directory profile. [Dr. McVey](/drwilliammcvey) is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, has focused on this work for over a decade, and built a practice where nothing about who you are needs a preamble or a glossary.

Some clients come for identity work. Just as many come for [anxiety](/specialties/anxiety-therapy), careers, couples work, or grief — and simply want a therapist where being queer is context, not curriculum.

## What we work with

- Coming out — at 19 or at 55
- Identity, faith, and family negotiations
- Queer relationships and open, honest couples work
- Sexuality and intimacy, with clinical sexology depth
- Minority stress: vigilance, code-switching, the tax of it
- Everything else — because queer people also just have lives

## Why the specifics matter

You shouldn't have to educate your therapist before therapy can help you. Here the foundation is already laid: the clinical knowledge, the community context, and — where it matters — the lived understanding of finding your way to your own sexuality against resistance. Dr. McVey's path into this work began there, and the practice's mission still carries it: no one should feel lost with no roadmap.

The work itself draws on the full toolkit — [EMDR](/approach/emdr) for trauma, [Gottman](/approach/gottman-method) for couples, [IFS](/approach/internal-family-systems) for the internal negotiations that a divided world installs.

## Practical details

55-minute sessions, $215 with [sliding scale](/rates) from $150–194. [Downtown DC](/locations/downtown-dc) office or [telehealth](/online-therapy-dc) across the District. The [free consultation](/book-online) is a fit-check in both directions — come ask us anything.

FAQ

## Common questions

### Are you actually part of the community, or 'an ally'?

Dr. McVey is a community member. Paul El-Meouchy works extensively with gender identity and expat LGBTQIA+ clients. Ask either of us anything you like in the consultation — the vetting is welcome.

### Do you work with people questioning their orientation or identity?

Yes — questioning is welcome here without any pressure toward a conclusion. The work is clarity on your terms and your timeline.

### Can we come as a queer couple?

Absolutely. Couples work here doesn't need translating for queer relationships — the structures, the intimacy work, all of it is already fluent.
