# Relationship Issues

The same fight in different costumes. Distance that neither of you chose but both maintain. A pattern in who you pick, or how it ends, that has survived every resolution to do it differently.

Relational patterns are learnable and un-learnable. This work is for individuals examining their side of the pattern — and for pairs who want to change it together.

## What this covers

- Recurring conflict — content changes, choreography doesn't
- Emotional distance and the roommate drift
- Trust — rebuilding it, or learning to extend it again
- Dating patterns that keep arriving at the same place
- Attachment [anxiety](/specialties/anxiety-therapy): the pursuing, the protesting, the checking
- Family-of-origin patterns replaying in adult relationships

## How the work goes

For individuals, we map the pattern — where it came from, what it protects, what it costs — and change your half of it. Change one dancer and the dance often changes with them.

For couples, we use Gottman Method structure: how you argue, how you repair, how you turn toward or away from each other in the small moments that decide everything. Intimacy concerns are welcome in the room; with a doctorate-level sex therapist in the practice, nothing needs to be euphemized.

When betrayal is part of the story, we pace the work for it — stabilization before rebuilding, honesty before reassurance.

## Practical details

55-minute sessions, $215 with [sliding scale](/rates) from $150–194 — individuals or couples. Downtown at [One Franklin Square](/therapy-office-washington-dc) or via [telehealth](/online-therapy-dc) across DC. Start with a [free 15-minute consultation](/book-online).

FAQ

## Common questions

### Should I come alone or with my partner?

Either works. If your partner is willing, couples work changes the pattern directly. If not, individual work on your side of the dynamic is genuinely effective — and often changes the whole system.

### Do you take sides in couples work?

No. The client in couples therapy is the relationship. You'll both be challenged, and both defended.

### We're not in crisis. Is therapy overkill?

The best couples work happens before crisis. Think of it as maintenance for the most consequential partnership you have.
